Loud noises can become quite prevalent during the summer months.
While not necessarily scary for humans, some dogs can become anxious from loud sounds generated by:
• 4th of July Fireworks
• Thunder
• Car Alarms
• Power Tools
• Vacuum Cleaners (scary for humans, too)
If not handled properly, the fear can lead to behavioral issues such as barking, urinating in the home, hiding in unusual places, or trying to escape.
Treatment methods can range from “thunder-shirts” to creating a distraction via behavior modification. Provide the assurance that they are safe and secure.
Over time, if you don’t see a decrease in the level of anxiety for your dog, consult your veterinarian. They can recommend appropriate medications.
